Long ago, there lived a heavenly apsara named Anjana. Due to a curse, she had to take birth on Earth as a vanara (monkey-like being). To be free from that curse, she began deep meditation in the forests near today’s Hampi, Karnataka.
For years, she prayed to Lord Shiva, asking him to bless her with a divine son.
Pleased by her devotion, Lord Shiva gave his blessing — that a part of his own energy would take birth as her child.
At the same time, King Dasharatha in Ayodhya performed a special yagya and received sacred kheer. A small portion of that kheer was carried by Vayu Dev (the Wind God) to Anjana.
